This whimsical artwork presents a charming trio of owls, each adorned in ornate royal attire, inspired by the historical figures of Nasser al-Din, Jeyran, and Malijak.
Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar, who ruled Persia from 1848 to 1896, is remembered for his modernization efforts and large royal harem. The harem in Golestan Palace housed hundreds of women, including wives and concubines, symbolizing the Shah’s wealth and political power.
Among the women, Jeyran, his favorite wife, stood out for her simplicity and intelligence, earning the Shah’s deep affection. Another notable figure was Malijak, a young boy who became the Shah’s beloved companion and stirred court controversy.
The harem played a significant role in court politics and cultural life. Nasser al-Din Shah, an avid photographer, even documented his harem, offering rare glimpses into their private world. His relationships, especially with Jeyran and Malijak, remain subjects of historical fascination and artistic inspiration.
